The process of getting dental implants typically involves the following steps:
- Consultation: The first step is to schedule a consultation with an implant dentist. During the consultation, the dentist will examine your mouth, take X-rays, and discuss your goals and concerns.
- Planning: The dentist will then plan the implant placement, taking into consideration factors such as the location of the missing tooth, the health of the jawbone, and the overall condition of the patient's oral health.
- Surgery: The next step is to place the implant into the jawbone. This is typically done under local anesthesia or IV sedation. The implant is inserted into the jawbone and allowed to heal for several months.
- Healing: After the implant is placed, it takes several months for the implant to fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. During this time, the patient will typically be given a temporary replacement tooth to wear.
- Restoration: After the implant has fused with the jawbone, a permanent replacement tooth (such as a crown, bridge, or denture) is attached to the implant.
The entire process can take several months to complete, depending on the healing time required. It’s important to note that the success of dental implants depends on factors such as the patient’s overall health and the quality of the bone in the jaw.
