Dental crown lengthening is a procedure used to expose more of the tooth structure above the gum line, making it possible to place a dental crown, bridge or a filling. This procedure is typically done when there is not enough tooth structure remaining above the gum line to support a dental restoration.
The process of dental crown lengthening typically involves the following steps:
- Anesthesia: The gums are numbed using a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the procedure.
- Gum Tissue Removal: The dentist or periodontist will use specialized instruments to remove a small amount of gum tissue and bone, exposing more of the tooth structure.
- Reshaping Of The Bone: In some cases, the dentist or periodontist may need to reshape the bone surrounding the tooth to create a stable foundation for the dental restoration.
- Suture Placement: The gums are then sutured to promote healing.
- Temporization: A temporary dental restoration will be placed over the tooth to protect it while the gums heal.
- Placement Of The Final Restoration: After healing, the patient will return to the dentist to have the final restoration placed.
