Oral Prophylaxis
Oral prophylaxis, also known as a dental cleaning, is a routine procedure performed by a dental hygienist to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth.
The process typically includes the following steps:
- The dental hygienist will use a small mirror to examine the teeth and gums for any signs of plaque, tartar, or other issues.
- Next, the hygienist will use a small, handheld instrument called a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth.
- After scaling, the hygienist will use a rotating brush and toothpaste to polish the teeth, removing any remaining plaque and stains.
- Finally, the hygienist may floss the teeth and apply fluoride to help strengthen the enamel and prevent cavities.
Oral prophylaxis is usually done every six months and it is important as it helps remove plaque and tartar buildup, preventing tooth decay and gum disease.
